The pendulum: How educational trends come and go

Recently I read a comment on Reddit that summarized the importance and, to me, the true meaning of education. In the 1950s, they taught young adults how to throw dinner parties for professional reasons, such as hosting a boss from work to obtain a raise or promotion. They taught that not because it was necessary at that moment but because they saw it as a potential obstacle or opportunity the kids might run across. I believe that this showcases the analytical skills required to be a teacher.

A recent trend in education has been online. Covid nineteen showed us some hurdles, such as what to do with medical students. Some students were able to pitch in and get hands-on experience. Some students took internet internships that significantly diminished their ability to learn and offer good medical care to patients.

Lately, it seems that our educational trends are short-sighted and rigid. These last few years have added to the urgency to stay ahead of the game, and I encourage educators to incorporate technology conservatively. I believe that social science proves that STEM is nothing without art.
